Types of Marine Tankers: Similarities and Differences

Imagine if you have to load your crude oil into drums or barrels before you ship them to a foreign country? I am sure you don’t want to go through such stress in the name of shipping.

Tankers are vessels used for carrying large quantities of liquid products from one to another. Without wasting your time, let’s take a look at the many types of marine tankers with which you can ship your products.

There are different types of marine tankers, and we can also classify them into different categories. Let us now consider what each of them stands for and their usefulness.

Types of Oil and Gas Tanker

Oil Tankers.

Oil tankers are the most common among the many types of marine vessels. They are vessels with which producers or marketers transport oil products from one seaport to another. However, the shipment could be within the same country or for international.

There are two categories of an oil tanker. The first category is crude oil tankers and the second, product tankers.

Crude oil tankers are mainly for shipping crude oil from FPSOs and FSOs to other destinations such as tank farm and refineries. On the other hand, product tankers primarily carry refined petroleum products such as petrol, kerosene, automotive gas oil, paraffin and a few others.

LNG Carrier.

LNG Carriers are those cargo tankers designed for shipment of Liquefied Natural Gas from one country to another. However, this type of carriers requires careful handling base on the nature of their cargoes. Also, there are currently few LNG carrier reason being that demand for gas is still very minimal. They are fewer in numbers compare to crude oil or refined petroleum products.

Slurry Tankers

This type of tankers carries the waste product to the area where it will be economically useful. According to Oil and Gas Journal, Slurry oil is a heavy aromatic by-product of a refinery’s fluid catalytic cracking unit that forms a small part of global fuel oil supply.

Like every other type of oil tankers, a slurry tanker is not ideal for shipment of other chemical products.

Hydrogen Tankers

They are cargo tankers specially designed for shipment of Liquefied hydrogen gas. You can’t use them for any other purpose.

Other Types Of Marine Tankers

Juice Tankers

They are neither chemical nor oil tanker but vessels for transporting fruit juice from mostly Brazil to other parts of the world. Juice tankers generally carry either concentrated or fresh orange juice in large quantities.

Also, fruit Juice tankers are commonly for transporting orange juice from one seaport to another. However, to ensure the preservation, the shipment of their cargoes usually requires controlled temperature.

Wine Tankers.

These tankers are for carrying wine from the place of production to their different destination. Wine tankers are for transporting already produced wine from one country to another country for packaging.

Chemical Tankers.

Chemical tankers are those tankers that transport various liquid chemicals. You don’t want to dilute your ammonia with Lysergic acid hence, each chemical tanker transport the same kind of chemical.

Handling of Different Types of Marine Tankers

All marine tankers share a lot of things in common, and they also have some differences. Another thing we have to consider is vessel handling You may want to visit Newcastle Port Corporation for more information on ship handling safety guidelines.
